Surprisingly polymer clay necklaces are easy to create once you know the basics of creating a polymer clay charm piece! Here's how you can use a polymer clay cutter with a mama stamp to create a unique polymer clay necklace for a special mama friend as a Mothers Day gift idea!
What You Need To Create A Mama Necklace
Tools for working with the Clay
- Polymer clay (Sculpey Souffle is my favorite)
- Tile for baking polymer clay - Large Tile - Small Tile
- Polymer clay pasta roller
- This hand drill
Supplies for creating the Mama Necklace
-
A necklace chain
For the necklace chain, I purchased a ready-to-go necklace chain from Hobby Lobby, or you can check out these gold necklace chains with clasps from Amazon.
- Wire Cutter to cut the chain (if not using a chain that’s already split)
- Jump rings
- Mama polymer clay stamp and bar cutter
Create The Mama Polymer Clay Bar
To create the Mama necklace we need to first start with getting a bar charm with the mama stamped onto the clay.
- Roll out your clay on setting 1 (the thickest setting) on a pasta clay machine. If you are manually rolling out your clay, this is typically 2.5-3mm thickness.
- Use the bar polymer clay cutter to create the bar/rectangle shape first
- Press the Mama polymer clay cutter into the clay, ensuring you don’t press too firm that you go through the clay.
- Pop-off the mama stamp using a tool, blade or your fingers
- If the bar shape is distorted, use a flat straight edge blade to reshape to a rectangular shape
Get creative with this! You can add texture or an additional stamp like a heart or initials (if you have letter stamps like these)
Here is a quick video to show you how to use the polymer clay mama stamp cutters:
Once you have your clay mama piece, bake to the directions of your clay and sand the edges as needed. You will want your clay piece fully baked and sanded before assembling the necklace.
Assemble The Polymer Clay Mama Necklace
Split The Chain
Since we need our chain connected to each side of the bar, we need a split necklace chain. I use a wire cutter to cut the center of the necklace chain. This created 2 parts.
Drill Holes For The Chain
Since we are creating a bar necklace, we need to drill 2 holes on both sides of the necklace bar. Make sure the holes are large enough to fit your jump rings and create movement with the Mama bar.
Connect The Mama Bar With The Necklace Chain
Using jump rings that fit the necklace chain, connect the necklace chain to the polymer clay stamped charm
TIP! Make sure that your jump ring will fit inside of the hole of the chain of your necklace. You can double check by looking at the diameter of the chain links, and the diameter of the jump rings you have.
The Polymer Clay Mama Necklace Makes The Perfect Gift
Once you have the necklace assembled, you are ready to gift this cute mama bar necklace to your mama friends for Mothers Day! Add in a pair of earrings, a cute mug, or even this blind date with a book! You have the perfect gift to appreciate your favorite mama on Mother’s Day.
